The Road Not Taken: Great St. Bernard Pass

Also known as the Col du Grand-Saint-Bernard, a winding stretch of road that traverses the Alps, connecting Switzerland and Italy. If you have the time and don’t mind taking a detour, then go for it.

It took us 5 hours or so from Geneva to Milan using this route; on the way back, taking the road that goes through the Mont Blanc, we made the trip in 3 hours (paying our way through, too).

The valley had seen its first snow of the season the night before we drove past. In the depths, it still felt like autumn; at the very height of the trail, it felt like we were well into the cold winter months.
