A group of students screened this 30-minute documentary yesterday and I was floored by what I saw and heard. I knew that refugees and migrants were detained but not about the ways in which they are exploited for their work, remain outside of the law (virtually with no rights and no voice), and how large prison-managing corporations profit profusely off of them.

This film focuses on the UK system (second-largest in the world). I was so appalled I can’t even imagine what the US system is like, being the largest privately-run correctional system in the world. In the UK, prisoners and detainees are paid £1 for every hour they work; in the US they are paid $1 per day of work.
